Of all the things that went right for Canada in their dominant win over Qatar, they will miss key midfielder Ismael Kone for the rest of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after Thursday evening.
Kone was taking part in the second World Cup of his international career with Canada. He debuted in the 2022 edition in Qatar, taking part in all three of the squad’s group-stage matches.
The standout midfielder made his way up the ranks before securing a firm role in the lineup, helping Canada prepare to host some matches of the 2026 tournament.
Drawing 1-1 against Bosnia and Herzegovina in their opener, they made a statement performance to torch Qatar with an incredible offensive display. This gives the Canadians a solid chance to advance to the knockouts.
However, Canada will have to play the remainder of its tournament without Kone’s services. Following a poor challenge from Assim Modibo, Kone suffered a serious leg injury as medical officials carted him off the pitch during the second half.
