Canada went into its second World Cup game against Qatar with strong motivation to earn the team’s first win in the international competition. The Canadians came out on fire and played a brilliant first half in gaining a 3-0 advantage over their rivals.
Canada was able to add to its lead in the second half of the World Cup game. The nation was taking full advantage of playing at home in Vancouver’s BC Place. They piled it on after key player Ismael Kone was injured after an ill-advised tackle from behind by Qatar’s Madibo.
Canada had a 5-0 ladvantage through the conclusion of regulation time. They pushed the final score to 6-0 in stoppage time. The Canadian fans were wildly appreciative of their team.
They had been very unhappy in the first half when their team was dominating the action, but officials blew their whistles for the FIFA-mandated hydration break.
While those breaks make plenty of sense when games are played mid-day under bright sunshine and heat, the roof was closed at BC Place and the climate was temperate. A hydration break did not seem necessary to the fans in attendance.
Canada was held to a 1-1 tie in its first game by Bosnia and Herzegovina, making a victory over Qatar necessary. Canada’s Jonathan David got the home team off to a sharp start by scoring two first-half goals. The team dominated from that point forward. David would earn a hat trick with a late goal in stoppage time.
In addition to David’s goals, Canada also received goals from Cyle Larin and Nathan Saliba. The other Canadian goal was an own goal delivered on a deflection of a shot by Canada’s Jacob Shaffelburg.
