New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani delivered one of the most memorable moments of the Knicks’ championship parade on Thursday with a speech that connected the team’s title run to the experience of living in New York, Heavy reports.
While celebrating the franchise’s first championship in 53 years, Mamdani reflected on the challenges both the city and the team have faced over the years.
“The Knicks did not just win for New York City, they won like New York City,” Mamdani told the crowd gathered outside City Hall.
He then compared the Knicks’ journey to obstacles many New Yorkers encounter in their everyday lives.

A Message That Resonated
“What is New York if not your back up against the wall? A dream that feels just out of reach. A rent payment you don’t know how you’ll ever make,” Mamdani said.
The mayor continued by referencing the long odds the Knicks faced before completing their championship run.
“What is New York if not 99.6% of the world stacked against you?” he asked. “And who are New Yorkers if not people who hear those odds and smile, who look at a 0.4% chance of success and ask, why are you giving me a head start?”
The quote quickly became one of the highlights of the celebration.
Mamdani closed the segment by tying the city and the team together.
“This is our city. This is our team. For 53 years we watched. For 53 years we waited. Now we’ve won.”
The speech came after a parade that brought thousands of fans to lower Manhattan. While players such as Jalen Brunson received plenty of attention throughout the festivities, Zohran Mamdani’s remarks captured the emotion of a fan base that had waited more than five decades to celebrate an NBA championship.
