The Minnesota Twins have plenty to consider before the MLB trade deadline arrives on Aug. 3. They are just 36-40 through almost three months of the 2026 campaign, but they are heating up and trail the Toronto Blue Jays by only one and a half games for the final American League Wild Card berth. Byron Buxton has easily been their most valuable player, but he is also an injury-prone 32-year-old who will be a free agent at the end of the 2028 season.
When surveying all the evidence, it appears that Twins general manager Jeremy Zoll may have a tough decision to make. Well, it sounds like Buxton is doing it for him. The 2025 Silver Slugger and 2017 Platinum Glove winner made it clear where he stands when it comes to trade rumors.
“I don’t give a f—,” he said , per Dan Hayes of The Athletic. “End of the day, nobody’s in my shoes. Nobody can say anything about what I’m going to do. I know what I’m doing. The only way I’m getting out of here — they’re going to have to come talk to me and tell me something else. Simple as that. … I ain’t said nothing about leaving, nor will I. I’m a Twin.”
Buxton has a full no-trade clause and is reportedly unlikely to switch teams at the deadline. The two-time All-Star obviously has an affinity for the franchise and city, but he still has plenty of time to change his mind. Minnesota also has plenty of time to dispel any notion that it will be a seller this summer. The Twins have won four straight following Thursday’s 9-3 road victory over the Texas Rangers and have multiple paths to October baseball, courtesy of a weak division and Wild Card race.
Considering the team has made the playoffs just once in the previous five seasons, management may want to give the fans a reason to be emotionally invested during September. A healthy Byron Buxton certainly increases Minnesota’s playoff chances for 2026. He is batting .270 with 23 home runs, a .330 on-base percentage, .589 slugging percentage and .919 OPS through 64 games.
If Buxton and Twins brass have a change of heart, No. 25 will instantly become one of the most coveted right-handed hitters on the trade market. But this does not sound like a man who is conflicted whatsoever.
