The New York Yankees cooled off on Thursday, failing to complete a sweep of the Chicago White Sox in a 5-1 series-finale loss at home.
Making the night worse for the Bronx Bombers is the injury suffered in the contest by second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr., who left the game in the fourth inning after getting hit by a foul ball that bounced off the ground and went straight into his groin area.
There is no clarity yet in terms of the extent of the two-time MLB All-Star’s injury, leaving the door open for some optimism.
“I’m hoping he is [okay],” New York manager Boone said after the game about Chisholm, via Gary Phillips of NY Daily News Sports. “I haven’t heard anything yet.”
After his exit, Chisholm was replaced by Anthony Volpe, who went 1-for-1 and had a walk.
The Yankees were very much in the game up until the top of the eighth inning, when White Sox pinch-hitter Andrew Benintendi launched a grand slam off Yankees reliever Camilo Doval. It was the fourth time grand slam of his career in the big leagues for Benintendi, who is quite familiar with Yankee Stadium, having played before for the Yankees and the Boston Red Sox.
Hopefully for New York, which got 6.1 innings of one-run ball from starting pitcher Ryan Weathers, Chisholm’s injury is not serious enough for him to miss time, especially with Yankees stars Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton and Trent Grisham all nursing injuries.
The Yankees remain atop the American League East Division with a 45-28 record.
