Angels’ Kurt Suzuki defends Mike Trout after brutal injury in lopsided game

The Los Angeles Angels did not have a great game on Wednesday night against the Arizona Diamondbacks. Los Angeles fell behind early, and by the end of the game, Kurt Suzuki’s team was on the wrong side of an 8-1 loss. Additionally, the Halos lost Mike Trout to injury in this game.

In the top of the eighth while down 8-1 against Arizona, Trout tapped a ground ball to third base. Nolan Arenado fielded it well and fired a throw across the infield for the out. Trout ran hard to try to beat the throw. He was called out, and he injured himself in the process.

The Angels have placed the all-time Halos great on the injured list. Before facing the Athletics on the road, Suzuki took time to defend Trout for trying to leg out the infield hit despite the lopsided score.

“How can you tell a guy not to play hard? That’s that’s what Mike is wired to do whether it’s 8-1, 14-1. That’s what makes Mike, Mike. He plays the game hard. He sets the example for everybody,” the Angels skipper said, via team beat reporter Rhett Bollinger.

Trout has had a very solid season for a struggling Los Angeles team to this point in the year. Through 74 games, he is slashing .234/.394/.472 with 17 home runs and 36 runs batted in. He is in the top 10 in the American League for home runs at this time.

When the Angels will see the future Hall of Famer return to the diamond remains to be seen. In any event, it’s certainly a big loss for Suzuki and his club as they try to find some momentum heading into the All-Star Break in July.
