On Monday, the Milwaukee Brewers took a 6-0 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies, as Jacob Misiorowski was dominant. Misiorowski had a career game, giving up just one hit and striking out 15 in nine innings of work.
As Phillies manager Don Mattingly watched on, he commented about the dominance he was witnessing to his ace, Zach Wheeler, according to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic.
“Wheels, this is what it looked like whenever you came to Miami and we had you and (Jacob) deGrom back-to-back,” said Mattingly.
Mattingly was the manager of the Miami Marlins from 2016 through 2022. From 2017 through 2019, he had to watch Jacob deGrom and Zach Wheeler pitch for the New York Mets. While Wheeler was dominant in those days, he did not agree with his manager’s take.
“I keep telling people I wish I was that in sync with my body at his age,” Wheeler said. “It would have been a whole different game for me.”
Misiorowski has been dominant this year. He is 8-2 on the season with a 1.34 ERA, 131 strikeouts, and a 0.74 WHIP. All three of those marks lead MLB. In the last eight starts, Miz has been on the winning side in seven of them, has given up just two runs, with only one earned, and struck out 80 batters. Wheeler has enjoyed watching the young phenom pitch and has admiration.
“Just how fluid he is. There are no glitches, no stops or anything like that,” Wheeler said. “When he picks up and goes, everything is just perfect motion. He’s behind the ball, over his front leg, driving through the ball. I’ve caught myself a couple of times just looking at his clips, just to kind of remind myself, that’s how I want to be. Sometimes, I can get a little too robotic. I watch him or deGrom and think, ‘I need to move like that again.’”
Misiorwski is putting up a Cy Young-worthy level year for the Brewers. At just 24-years old, it could be the first of many for the pitcher. Meanwhile, he will return to the mound again on Friday night, visiting the Atlanta Braves.
