The Seattle Mariners may be just 39-37 overall this season, but they still lead the lackluster American League West division. Seattle would still love to further improve its roster before the trade deadline. Cal Raleigh recently returned from injury which feels like a trade acquisition in all reality, but the Mariners still have work to do when it comes to adding to the roster. According to Mark Feinsand of MLB.com, Boston Red Sox veteran reliever Aroldis Chapman may be a fit for Seattle.
Feinsand mentioned the Mariners, Pittsburgh Pirates and Chicago White Sox as “potential fits” for Chapman. In all reality, almost every contender around the game could make sense for the veteran left-hander. Most teams need bullpen help, and adding a star like Chapman would improve any bullpen.
The 38-year-old has pitched to a stellar 0.83 ERA across 22 outings this year to go along with 14 saves. Mariners closer Andres Munoz has a 5.47 ERA at the moment. Trading for Chapman could give the Mariners a new closer while allowing Munoz to pitch in the 8th inning.
The Mariners possibly trading for Chapman would make sense. The Red Sox have struggled this season and moving the closer for prospects will likely be the team’s best decision.
The Mariners are not a bad team, but upgrading the roster should be a priority. Seattle needs to make some moves. Right now, the ball club would have a difficult time making a deep postseason run even if they were to win the AL West.
An Aroldis Chapman trade would help the Mariners take a step forward.
