As rumors will surround the New York Yankees regarding trades the team could make ahead of the deadline, the one position that has been mentioned as a need is catcher. While the Yankees would reportedly love to get Baltimore Orioles’ Adley Rutschman, that is far-fetched, as there are other catchers that a MLB insider mentions as targets.
Another catcher that Joel Sherman and Jon Heyman mention as making a lot of sense to New York is Minnesota Twins’ Ryan Jeffers, but besides him, Heyman would mention Colorado Rockies’ Hunter Goodman and Houston Astros’ Christian Vazquez.
“I mean, the Yankees will probably put in a call on Hunter Goodman. How close are the Rockies?” Heyman asked, via New York Post Sports. “He’s still got three years to go, he’s really good, he’s got 20 home runs, right, and that’s probably a long shot about putting a call, they’re more likely to end up with probably a Christian Vazquez type guy, and that’s again Houston, but even if you don’t sell, you could trade your backup catcher.”

More on the Yankees’ link to Twins’ Ryan Jeffers
It wouldn’t be a shock for these MLB insiders to see the Yankees pursue and acquire Jeffers, as the 29-year-old is missing time dealing with a hand injury. However, there is no denying the struggles of New York’s catching unit, especially with Austin Wells’ injury.
“Their catchers are hitting .173 this year. Obviously, we know that Wells is out now with the headaches; he wasn’t hitting,” Heyman said. “I don’t know whether it was because of the headaches or what, the other guys have not hit, they’ve had limited time, but yeah, I mean, I think if Jeffers is right, and he had the hamate injury, once he comes back, that makes sense to me. They do look like a seller, and Jeffers is a free agent after the year, so to me that one makes sense if he’s back and healthy. So I like that one.”
At any rate, it remains to be seen if the Yankees address their need at catcher ahead of the trade deadline.
