Blue Jays starter Shane Bieber’s encouraging injury update comes with ‘funky’ catch

Toronto Blue Jays starting pitcher Shane Bieber is continuing to recover from an elbow injury. The right-handed starter recently made a rehab start and it seems like Bieber’s return may be near. He addressed his recent rehab start — that saw him throw 80 pitches — on Friday, via Arden Zwelling of Sportsnet.

“Shane Bieber says he’s happy with how he felt during and after his last rehab outing, throwing 80 pitches for Buffalo on Wednesday. Called it a funky outing results-wise but liked how stuff held. Not sharing next steps yet other than he’ll throw a bullpen in Chicago on Saturday,” Zwelling reported.

UPDATE: According to Zwelling, Blue Jays manager John Schneider said Bieber could return on Monday against the Houston Astros.

Bieber, 31, was acquired by the Blue Jays from the Cleveland Guardians during the 2025 MLB season. He made a significant impact during the Blue Jays’ World Series run. However, Bieber has yet to pitch at the MLB level so far in 2026 due to injury.

Toronto is hoping to have him available for the second half of the season. Bieber could play a crucial role down the stretch as the Blue Jays look to increase their placement in the standings.

Toronto is 37-38 and in third place in the American League East standings at the moment. The ball club is nine games behind the New York Yankees for first place. The Blue Jays are currently tied for the third American League Wild Card spot, however.

While Toronto is still in the postseason conversation, the team is certainly looking for a more consistent overall performance moving forward. Shane Bieber’s return from injury — whenever it does happen — should help them accomplish that goal.
