The San Francisco Giants are struggling mightily in Tony Vitello’s first season as manager. Now, the franchise is ready to host a full blown fire sale.
Amongst the players who could be dealt is third baseman Matt Chapman. And in terms of teams who could acquire him, MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand sees the St. Louis Cardinals and Philadelphia Phillies as strong fits.
“The Giants are in full-on sell mode, prepared to take offers on their high-priced players, including Chapman, Willy Adames and Rafael Devers,” Feinsand wrote. “Chapman, who is owed $100 million over the next four years, is the most likely of the trio to be moved, as he remains an above-average glove at third base while also producing offensively (7 HR, 41 RBIs, .737 OPS in 73 games).”
After a slow start to the season, the Phillies have worked their way back into the playoff hunt with their 40-35 record. Adding a bat like Chapman’s could be necessary for Philadelphia to get fully over the hump.
The Cardinals are supposed to be in the beginning stages of a rebuild. However, they have shocked the MLB world with their 40-33 record. Trading for Chapman would be a complete organizational shift, but show St. Louis believes they’re ready to actually compete.
Over his 73 games in 2026, Chapman is hitting .252 with seven home runs and 41 RBIs. With a Gold Glove as recently as 2024, he still offers strong defensive play at the hot corner. He has five over his career, including a Platinum Glove.
The Giants seem committed to tearing things down, meaning Chapman’s time in San Francisco could soon be over. Who he ends the season with is yet to be seen.
