Wyndham Clark hopes Oakmont locker incident can stay in past amid US Open lead

Wyndham Clark leads the US Open as of this story’s writing with a stellar score of -7 through his first two days of the tournament. On the surface, this story has the makings of a 32-year-old chasing a dream. One would imagine that many fans would be rooting for him. However, there is a dark cloud that is undeniable at the US Open for Clark, as an unfortunate incident occurred almost exactly one year during the tournament.

He destroyed a locker in the clubhouse at Oakmont — which is where the US Open was held in 2025. Clark was later banned from the golf club.

The 2023 US Open winner wants to move on from the incident. He is hoping he can create a new reputation with a strong tournament this year at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club.

“I’ve gotten a lot of grief (from fans) and rightfully so,” Clark said, via Kevin Van Valkenburg. “Obviously that was a terrible incident. Hopefully I can win those people back.”

Wyndham Clark is sitting in a good position with his commanding lead at the moment. However, stars such as Rory McIlroy often play their best golf later during the weekend. Clark still has plenty of work to do.

In order to win back the fans he may have lost from the 2025 incident, Clark will need to keep his emotions in check. Of course, winning the 2026 US Open would certainly not hurt matters either. This has the potential to be a career-changing weekend for the 32-year-old rising star.
