As rumors surround the New York Yankees and what players the team is looking to get ahead of the trade deadline, one of the needs the ball club has is addressing the bullpen. Despite the rumors around the Yankees, a move was made that made the team lose a pitcher in their system.
Relief pitcher Peter Strzekecki had a clause in his minor league contract where he opted out and is now a free agent, where any team could sign him, via MLB insider Jon Heyman.
“Peter Strzelecki has opted out of his Yankees deal and is now a free agent,” Heyman wrote on X, formerly Twitter.
“Strzelecki exercised an opt-out clause in his minor-league contract and is now a free agent. The 31-year-old reliever has collected a 4.81 ERA and 29:5 K: BB over 24.1 frames at the Triple-A level this season. He has not pitched in the majors since 2024,” CBS Sports wrote.
As mentioned, the 31-year-old has not played at the major league level since 2024, as he made 10 appearances with the Cleveland Guardians. He started his career with the Milwaukee Brewers, playing two years with the ball club, then spending some time with the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Having signed a minor league contract with the Yankees, he played at the Triple-A level, but neve finding enough validity to promote him to the major league level. It remains to be seen what happens with Strzelecki and which team signs him, but New York has their own issues with their bullpen.
At any rate, the Yankees are currently 45-28, which puts them first in the AL East, as the team starts a new series against the Cincinnati Reds on Friday night.
