Reds make Elly De La Cruz injury move amid Yankees series

The Cincinnati Reds have been without Elly De La Cruz all of June after placing him on the 10-day IL with a right hamstring injury. While the phenom shortstop has missed 15 games already this season, it appears a return is nearing in his latest update amid the club’s series against the New York Yankees.

Cincinnati announced on social media that De La Cruz is being sent to Triple-A Louisville to begin his rehab assignment. The 24-year-old slugger is in line to play his first rehab assignment game at some point over the weekend while the Reds take on the Yankees Friday through Sunday.

The Reds today sent IF Elly De La Cruz on a rehab assignment at Triple-A Louisville,” said the organization.

Getting the four-year veteran back in the infield will be a big boost for the Reds. Cincinnati has been relying on Edwin Arroyo while Matt McLain has been subbing in periodically. A return date is not yet clear, but the club is seemingly expecting De La Cruz to be back on th field at some point soon.

Through 232 at-bats so far this season, Elly De La Cruz has recorded 65 hits, 12 home runs, and 37 RBIs, giving him a .280 batting average and .346 OBP. He has also totaled 10 stolen bases on the campaign, as one of the elite base stealers in MLB right now.

While the club awaits De La Cruz to eventually bounce back from the right hamstring injury, the Reds will take on the Yankees in their next series. The first contest of the matchup is scheduled for Friday, June 19, at 7:05 p.m. EST.
