Achraf Hakimi Breaks Silence After Major World Cup Development

Morocco captain Achraf Hakimi addressed a major legal development on Friday after French authorities confirmed he will stand trial in a rape case stemming from allegations made in 2023, per Heavy.

The news emerged as Hakimi and Morocco prepared for their second World Cup match against Scotland. The Paris Saint-Germain defender has consistently denied the accusations and recently failed in an appeal seeking to have the case dismissed.

Rather than avoiding the topic, Hakimi released a lengthy statement on social media expressing confidence ahead of the upcoming trial.

“The justice system looked me in the eye and said, ‘If you weren’t famous, there would never have been a case,'” Hakimi wrote.

Hakimi Says He Has Been Waiting for Trial

Hakimi said he chose to remain quiet throughout much of the legal process because he trusted the courts and believed the facts would ultimately support his position.

“I’ve been waiting for this trial since day one,” he wrote. “And now I’m eagerly awaiting it. Finally, I’ll be able to speak.”

The defender also claimed the situation has affected his family and personal life, adding that he feels he has become an easy target because of his public profile.

Meanwhile, the plaintiff’s attorney, Rachel-Flore Pardo, welcomed the decision to move forward with a trial. She said the ruling brought her client “relief and hope” after more than three years of legal proceedings.

A trial date has not yet been announced.

The timing of the decision has drawn additional attention because Hakimi remains one of Morocco’s most important players during the World Cup. The 27-year-old has earned nearly 100 international appearances and helped Morocco become the first African nation to reach a World Cup semifinal in 2022.

For now, Hakimi remains focused on the tournament.
