As the United States men’s national team beat Australia on Friday afternoon, 2-0, the squad has advanced to the knockout stage, with a chance to win Group D with a Paraguay win or tie against Turkiye. With the USMNT making history in the World Cup, the game was marked with an exciting goal from Alex Freeman, as he spoke about the intensity of the moment.
While the first score was forced by the United States to be an own goal on Australia, a header from the 21-year-old gave them their second goal of the game. However, it needed to be reviewed if they were offside, but once it was confirmed, the team swarmed Freeman, who spoke about the emotions during that time.
“It was surreal knowing that I was able to contribute to my team in any way I can,” Freeman said, via Fox Sports. “I was kind of anxious when it went to VAR, and just be able to kind of celebrate the whole thing with my teammates, I think that just made it come together as a whole, and just made the experience so well, happy I can contribute to a clean sheet, but a win.”
“When it was confirmed, I look back, and they start all running, like, ‘Oh my god, I gotta run away from them, they’re gonna tackle me,’ and then we just end up running to the corner flag, and it was so emotional for me,” Freeman continued. “Because I think you dream at this moment, and then to finally happen, and be able to have such a support system to kind of help you celebrate it, it just means so much.”
