Urban One launches HBCU E-Sports league, 25 schools included

The future of HBCU esports is officially taking shape. PlayVS and Urban One have unveiled the name and logo for their highly anticipated collegiate esports initiative, officially introducing the Power4+ HBCU Esports League. The announcement marks a major milestone in the organizations’ partnership and provides the first official look at a league designed to expand competitive gaming opportunities for students at HBCUs.

The unveiling gives HBCU students, gamers, and esports enthusiasts a glimpse into a platform that aims to unite colleges from across the country through competition, community, and innovation. Designed to showcase student talent while creating pathways into the rapidly growing gaming industry, the league represents a significant investment in the next generation of Black gamers, content creators, technology professionals, and esports leaders.

As esports continues to emerge as one of the fastest-growing sectors in sports and entertainment, the Power4+ HBCU Esports League is positioning HBCUs at the center of the industry’s growth. Backed by PlayVS, one of the nation’s leading amateur esports platforms, and Urban One, the largest Black-owned media company in the United States, the initiative seeks to blend competition, culture, education, and career development into a uniquely HBCU experience.

Alongside the official branding announcement, PlayVS and Urban One confirmed that 25 HBCUs have already committed to participating in the league’s inaugural season. Among the founding institutions are Bowie State University, Clark Atlanta University, Grambling State University, and Howard University, with additional schools expected to join as the league continues to expand.

The partnership establishes a fee-free competitive gaming ecosystem within the PlayVS College League and outlines a strategic roadmap leading up to the inaugural season. During Summer 2026, an advisory committee composed of esports leaders from participating HBCUs will convene to finalize league operations and determine eligible game titles. In Fall 2026, a series of HBCU-focused invitational tournaments will provide students with opportunities to compete while allowing founding partners to engage with the growing esports community. The league’s inaugural season is scheduled to begin in February 2027 and will culminate with an in-person national championship event.

The collaboration also reflects a broader trend of media companies investing in gaming and esports. Urban One and PlayVS are not the first organizations to recognize the intersection between gaming, media, and culture. In recent years, companies such as iHeartMedia and Beasley Media Group have explored esports-related ventures, highlighting the industry’s growing influence and commercial potential.

“This first wave of participating schools is just the beginning,” said Charles O’Donnell, Director of Collegiate at PlayVS. “By partnering with Urban One, we are combining best-in-class competition with powerful storytelling and national reach. We’re building a long-term pipeline that supports students from competition to careers in gaming, technology, and beyond.”

Urban One Assistant Vice President of Sales Alvord Reese emphasized the significance of the initiative for both HBCUs and the gaming industry.

“The rapid adoption we’re seeing from HBCUs across the country affirms both the cultural relevance and the economic potential of esports within our community,” Reese said. “Black consumers continuously drive cultural and commercial trends, and gaming is no exception. By combining Urban One’s media reach with PlayVS’ infrastructure, we are creating a platform for partners and brands looking to authentically engage with this tech-forward audience.”
