Canada vs. Qatar World Cup game hits insane viewership number

Team Canada earned its first-ever World Cup win on Thursday after defeating Qatar 6-0. It was a brilliant performance from the Canadian team, and it turns out their supporters had their eyes glued to the television screens for that matchup.

Reports indicate that the Canada-Qatar match had over 10% of the Canadian population tuned into the game, according to Lukas Weese of The Athletic. TSN claimed the contest reached 5.3 million viewers in Canada.

“5.3 million viewers for CanMNT’s first World Cup win over Qatar, per TSN,” reported Weese. “That’s over 10 percent of the population. Incredible number.”

TSN also stated that it is the most-watched group stage game in Team Canada history. On top of the 5.3 million Canadian viewers, the match had an additional 6.4 million viewers worldwide.

“CanMNT’s 6-0 victory over Qatar at [the] 2026 FIFA World Cup is the most-watched group stage match ever in Canada, with 5.3 million viewers,” said TSN. “Overall, the match reached 11.7 million unique viewers.”

It was an historic game indeed. Not only did it break viewership records, but striker Jonathan David became the first Canadian ever to record a hat trick in a World Cup match. Cyle Larin, Nathan Saliba, and Mohammed Manai scored the other three goals to give Team Canada the blow-out win over Qatar.

Canada will play its third and final group game on Wednesday, June 24. The team will be taking on Switzerland. Both teams are tied with four points, so the winner will clinch Group B, guaranteeing a spot in the round of 32 of the World Cup.
