AJ Dybantsa says he didn’t work out for any teams before draft

Top prospect AJ Dybantsa and the Washington Wizards, and the Utah Jazz are three days away from the 2026 NBA Draft. While Dybantsa was projected to be the first overall pick this year, reports suggest that the Wizards could select Kansas’ Darryn Peterson instead. After his lone season at BYU, others assume AJ is hoping the Jazz select him with the No. 2 pick. He didn’t work out for either team.

In fact, Dybantsa, heading into Tuesday’s draft, revealed that he hasn’t worked out for any teams, he said, per Baseline Banter.

“I didn’t work out for none,” Dybantsa said. “I just visited the cities — they take me to the facilities. They take me to dinner. Talk. I don’t have to work out. They know what I can do.”

Without knowing which team he’ll be playing for in the 2026-27 NBA season, Dybantsa says this gravity of the situation hasn’t hit him yet. But it will, he says, on draft night.

Heading into the 2026 NBA Draft, BYU’s AJ Dybantsa is still projected to go No. 1 in Tuesday’s draft. There’s still a strong chance Dybantsa will be wearing a Wizards hat when NBA commissioner Adam Silver calls his name, according to ClutchPoints’ Brett Siegel.

“The Wizards have taken a very long look at Peterson multiple times throughout this pre-draft process, proving that their decision was not definitive heading into the final workouts for these prospects last week,” Siegel wrote.

“On the other side of the equation, you have Dybantsa and his camp, who are sitting back with their feet up with no worries whatsoever,” Siegel continued. “Dybantsa has made it clear that he feels he has done more than enough to be the No. 1 pick, and he has been on the record several times stating how well he would fit in with the Wizards. Not to mention, he’s made it clear he intends to take the Wizards to the playoffs.”

Darry Peterson has the second-best odds with Duke’s Cameron Boozer right behind him.
