The New York Mets (34-41) have been camping near the bottom of the National League standings all yearlong, but one has to wonder what the team’s current outlook would be if it had a healthy lineup. The club is only five games clear of the third and final Wild Card spot as it stands, so an active Francisco Lindor would theoretically provide a big boost. But he is not the only switch-hitting infielder that manager Carlos Mendoza could use right now.
Jorge Polanco has been on the injured list for more than two months due to Achilles bursitis, forcing the Mets to tinker with the designated hitter and first base slots. Fans may still have to wait a while longer before the free-agent signing returns to action.
“He’s still hitting, he ran the bases today, but going back to three, four weeks ago, there’s days where he feels good and then it flares up again and we have to slow things down,” Mendoza told reporters on Saturday, per SNY.

It does not sound like Polanco is nearing the end of his rehab process. He has battled injuries throughout his MLB career, which is why some fans got a little uneasy after the organization signed him to a two-year, $40 million contract in the offseason. The 2019 All-Star was struggling profusely in a minuscule sample size before landing on the IL.
Jorge Polanco is batting .179 with one home run, two RBIs, three doubles, a .246 on-base percentage, .286 slugging percentage and .532 OPS through 61 plate appearances this season.
