NBA rumors: Insider hints at Pelicans leading Ja Morant trade sweepstakes over Timberwolves

The Memphis Grizzlies have shown over the past year that they’re looking to head in a new direction with their franchise. The last step that would complete the reset is trading Ja Morant, and they’re still looking to find a suitor to take him. The two teams rumored to have interest in the point guard are the New Orleans Pelicans and Minnesota Timberwolves, and it looks like the former is in the lead to acquire him, according to NBA insider Sam Amick.

“The Grizzlies tried to trade Morant ahead of last season’s NBA trade deadline, but were unable to complete a deal” the Real GM wrote. “It’s been expected since then that Memphis would reengage teams in trade talks this offseason.

“Minnesota has been connected to Morant since last year. However, given Morant’s large salary, it might be hard for them to complete a deal. The Pelicans would likely have to move veteran point Dejounte Murray in a deal for Morant. New Orleans also has Jeremiah Fears, who they drafted last year in the first round, on the roster.”

The Pelicans could be a good spot for Morant, as they’ll still have solid players around him, but that’s only if they don’t trade them. Trey Murphy III has been in trade rumors, but the Pelicans have been hesitant about moving the young forward.

Everyone would be excited to see Morant and Zion Williamson play together, as they’re two athletic high flyers that are hard to stop in the paint.

With the No. 3 and No. 16 picks in the draft, the Grizzlies have a chance to get their new point guard of the future, and there have been rumors they’re trying to move back into the top 10. It’s uncertain if they’ll be able to, but it would be a big move for them.
