The Dallas Mavericks are currently gearing up for the NBA Draft, which is slated to get underway on Tuesday night. The Mavericks have the ninth pick in the draft and are looking to put a solid young team together around reigning Rookie of the Year winner Cooper Flagg, who went number one overall last year.
Recently, NBA insider Jake Fischer reported on speculation that the Mavericks could look to move down in the draft.
“One potential target if Dallas were to trade down: Washington big man Hannes Steinbach. Sources say that Steinbach, whose father Burkhard played alongside Mavericks legend Dirk Nowitzki on the German League team in their shared hometown of Wurzburg some 30 years ago, is among the prospects to have worked out for the Mavericks under consideration for the No. 9 pick,” reported Fischer on Marc Stein’s Substack.
ClutchPoints’ Brett Siegel recently had Steinbach going number 13 overall to the Miami Heat in a mock draft.
Fischer also reported that “The Mavericks, sources say, are also keen on trying to move up from No. 30.”
The Mavericks got that selection in their trade of Anthony Davis to the Washington Wizards last season, which conceded defeat on the disastrous Luka Doncic deal with the Los Angeles Lakers the prior year.
Adding a big man with their top first round pick would be an interesting strategy from Dallas, considering that they already have two centers in Daniel Gafford and Dereck Lively II on their roster, and theoretically could use some more help on the wing to supplement Flagg’s abilities.
However, newly minted general manager Masai Ujiri seems to have a clear team-building approach in mind for this roster.
The NBA Draft is slated to get underway on Tuesday evening.
