The New York Yankees have been playing some good baseball this season, and at this point of the year, they could afford to give a key player some rest. That key player is Gerrit Cole, who was scheduled to start in Sunday’s game against the Cincinnati Reds, but Aaron Boone wanted to give him an extra day of rest.
That led people to believe that Cole was dealing with some type of injury, but he confirmed that isn’t the case, according to Brendan Kuty of The Athletic.
“Btw Gerrit Cole says he’s fine and ready to start tomorrow in Detroit. Said he would have been ready to start today and that it was a ‘process-oriented decision’ to push the whole rotation back a day,” Kuty wrote on X, formerly Twitter.
That’s good news for the Yankees, and an extra day of rest may be key for Cole as the season continues. He was dealing with an elbow injury that he just returned from and has made five starts since. He has a 3-2 record with a 2.57 ERA, while pitching 28 innings and striking out 24 batters, walking eight of them. He also allowed 20 hits and 4 home runs.
The Reds won the previous game against the Yankees 10-2, and they may have an advantage once again in the final game of the series.
For the Yankees, they are probably fine not being at full strength for one game, so they could be fine on the health side as the season continues. They know that Cole is an important part of the team and will need him down the stretch.
