The U.S. men’s national team is putting up some excellent performances so far at this year’s World Cup. American defender Alex Freeman is one of the club’s leaders. His father is former Green Bay Packers wide receiver Antonio Freeman.
Antonio and some of his former Packers teammates went to a soccer game not long ago to watch Alex play. When Antonio’s friends saw Alex running and working his way around the field, they swore they were watching his dad Antonio play with Green Bay.
“Oh s—, I see them Freeman hips. He definitely got your hips,” one former teammate told Antonio, per ESPN. “He looks just like you running the slant,” another said.
Antonio Freeman explained why his son Alex seems to have picked up on his techniques.
“When I used to run a slant route, I kind of had to go boom, boom, boom,” he says, shifting his weight from one foot to the other. “And when he had that guy on the edge on that [goal], he went boom, boom, boom with the ball and just kicked it.” He added, “And then I went back to some video and I watched me running the slant, and I was like, ‘He got the hips.'”
Antonio played for the Packers from 1995-2001, and then again in 2003. He is in the Packers Hall of Fame and was on the team when Green Bay won the Super Bowl during the 1996 NFL season.
Alex Freeman has helped the U.S. team win two games already at this year’s World Cup. The Americans have defeated Paraguay and Australia. There’s a great deal of buzz around the U.S. that this team might be able to win the whole thing.
The American team next plays Turkiye on June 25.
