Pirates’ Konnor Griffin ready to make big first step in injury rehab

The Pittsburgh Pirates have been up and down this season, as they’re 38-39 and are in fourth place in the NL Central. They’ve missed Konnor Griffin for some time with a forearm injury as he was placed on the injured list, but the latest update is positive as he tries to get back on the field, according to Pirates insider Jason Mackey.

“Konnor Griffin expected to start rehab assignment this upcoming week,” Mackey wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

Griffin has made a big difference for the Pirates when he’s playing. In 51 games, he’s hit .270/.327/.402 with four home runs, nine doubles, two triples and 14 stolen bases. It would not be a surprise if he were Rookie of the Year this season, but first, he has to get back on the field.

The Pirates may look to be buyers at the trade deadline, and they have the fifth and 34th overall picks in the MLB Draft to use in a deal, according to MLB insider Ken Rosenthal.

“The most likely trades to happen in the next few weeks are ones that involve competitive-balance draft picks. Teams that acquire them would gain not only an additional selection in the upcoming amateur draft, but also extra bonus pool money. Competitive-balance picks are the only ones that can be traded. The Pittsburgh Pirates hold one of them, No. 34 overall. Rival clubs say they are open to trading it,” Rosenthal wrote.

It will be interesting to see what the Pirates decide to do, but they may want to make a move sooner rather than later.
