JJ Wetherholt joins exclusive Cardinals club with 2-HR explosion

The St. Louis Cardinals have seen some dazzling performances already this season from young slugger JJ Wetherholt. Wetherholt continued to impress on Sunday, when he homered in two consecutive innings for St. Louis.

Those homers came in the first two innings of a game against the Kansas City Royals. With those blasts, the young infielder joined a very small and exclusive club.

“This is the 12th time in Cardinals history a player has had 2 home runs through the first two innings of a game,” MLB.com reporter Sarah Langs posted to X, formerly Twitter.

Wetherholt’s second homer Sunday came with his team leading 5-2. It was a two-run shot.

The last Cardinals player to accomplish this feat was Paul Goldschmidt in 2022, the reporter said. The only other Cardinals rookie to homer in back-to-back innings was Chris Duncan in 2006.

Wetherholt is having a strong season for St. Louis. The young shortstop is batting .407 over his past seven games, helping to lead the St. Louis offense. He is seen as one of the team’s stars of the future.

The Cardinals are one of MLB’s big surprises this season. Ahead of the 2026 campaign, St. Louis parted ways with several veterans including starting pitcher Sonny Gray. Not many people expected much from this club in 2026.

The team is instead one of the best clubs in the National League. St. Louis enters Sunday with a 40-34 record. Cardinals fans are excited to see their young stars like Wetherholt do so well.

The Cardinals are currently second in the National League Central. St. Louis has lost six of their last 10 games, entering Sunday’s contest with Kansas City.

Cardinals fans hope that Wetherholt has another home run left in him on Sunday.
