Miles Russell creates epic Father’s Day moment during US Open final round

Five amateurs made the cut in the 126th US Open at Shinnecock Hills this year. Two are future stars who played together on Saturday and Sunday. Collegiate superstar Jackson Koivun will turn pro on Monday, but his playing partner made the viral moment of the tournament. High school star Miles Russell gave his dad an epic Father’s Day gift on the final hole of the US Open, asking him to caddie.

“Thought it’d be a good Father’s Day present,” Russell said, per the PGA Tour’s social media account.

On top of the great gesture, Russell and his mom made sure it was a surprise. The 17-year-old and his dad spoke with Normal Sport’s Kyle Porter about the moment. “Dad didn’t know about it because Miles only told his mom and a couple of friends. Said they didn’t say much to each other coming up 18 because his dad was just taking it all in. Couldn’t tell if he was emotional because he had sunglasses on,” Porter reported.

Russell qualified for the US Open through his local qualifying event after an epic high school career. He is committed to playing at Florida State alongside Charlie Woods, the son of 15-time major champion Tiger Woods. Charlie served as Russell’s caddie during final qualifying.

Russell shot two-over 72 and one-over 71 on Thursday and Friday, respectively, to make the cut. That tied him with Koivun at 3-over par, and the two amateurs were paired together. They both struggled on Saturday, shooting matching 74s to earn another date together. But they improved on Sunday, as Russell shot 70 and Koivun fired a 68.

Russell’s caddie pulled over on the 18th fairway, finding the player’s parents in the crowd. Then, he passed the bag and bib to Russell’s dad, creating the viral moment. It was a heartwarming US Open Father’s Day moment. One that Russell and Koivun both hope they can top one day by ending in the winner’s circle.
