Rangers sign promising young goalie to 2-year contract extension

The New York Rangers hope to find the right roster pieces to build a championship hockey team. New York is making a long-term commitment to one of their top young players. Goalie Dylan Garand is signing a two-year extension with the team, per the Rangers.

“Garand, 24, made three NHL appearances with the Rangers in 2025-26, posting a 2-0-1 record, along with a 1.62 goals against average and a .948 save percentage,” the team said in a release.

New York’s young goaltender made a powerful impression in his short time with the Rangers.

“Garand became the first Rangers rookie goaltender to earn at least one point in each of his first three NHL appearances since Henrik Lundqvist in 2005-06,” the team said.

Garand spent a good portion of the 2025-26 season playing in the AHL, with the Hartford Wolf Pack.

“The 6-1, 185-pounder has appeared in 148 career AHL games over parts of five seasons, all with the Wolf Pack, posting 65-57-18 record, along with a 2.90 goals against average, a .901 save percentage, and nine shutouts,” the release said.

During the 2025-26 season, the Rangers posted just 77 points. New York missed the postseason and had a disappointing campaign. Just a few years ago, the Rangers were in the Eastern Conference Final.

Dylan Garand is looking to make his mark with the Rangers

Garand is excited to be a part of this team moving forward.

“I’m definitely hungry to play in this league and for this organization,” Garand recently said, per The Athletic. “It’s very motivating for me going back (into) the summer. To be here and see what it takes, now I know. I know what I need to do this summer to come in and be prepared and put my best foot forward and execute.”

Time will tell if Garand is able to become a key piece of this Rangers roster. The goalie was originally selected by the Rangers in the fourth round of the 2020 NHL Entry Draft.

New York last won a Stanley Cup way back in 1994.
