Astros’ Yordan Alvarez rejects Home Run Derby after launching 25th of season

As Houston Astros superstar Yordan Alvarez once again impressed after the 2-1 win over the Cleveland Guardians on Sunday, he was asked about his possible participating for the Home Run Derby during the MLB All-Star festivities. With Alvarez having a home run for the Astros to give him an American League-leading 25 home runs, he would give an answer that the baseball world probably does not want to hear.

Alvarez would be asked after hitting the home run in the Astros’ win if he has any interest in being in the Home Run Derby, leading to a straightforward answer, according to Matt Kawahara of The Houston Chronicle.

“No,” Alvarez said.

While he did say during the 2024 MLB All-Star game, where he was the AL’s starting designated hitter, that he would be open to it down the line in his career, his thoughts are more definitive this time around.

“Not this year,” Alvarez said.

When it comes to Alvarez’s season so far for Houston, it has been electric, as he’s recorded a .322 batting average to go along with the 25 home runs and 56 RBIs, while also having an exceptional 1.067 OPS. Sunday saw Alvarez snap a seven-game streak without a home run, as he said through an interpreter, that he is feeling “very good right now.”

“I don’t think it’s a secret right now that they’re pitching me with a lot of caution. So I have to make adjustments to not chase the pitches that they want me to chase,” Alvarez said.

Alvarez looks to help Houston overcome its struggles this season, as after the aforementioned win over the Guardians, the team has a 37-42 record, putting them fourth in the AL West. The Astros start a new series on Monday against the Toronto Blue Jays.
