Wyndham Clark sends sincere message to Scottie Scheffler after winning US Open

Wyndham Clark bucked the noise and putted his way to his second title in the US Open at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in New York on Sunday, holding off Sam Burns by one stroke.

Fans were cheering for Scottie Scheffler to win a Grand Slam on his 30th birthday, but that did not distract Clark, who finished with a 3-over 73. He held a six-stroke lead entering the final round.

The crowd did not hide its disdain for Clark, jeering him after missed shots, which was not typical behavior in a major tournament. But as he said during the trophy ceremony, being the underdog is great at times.

The 32-year-old from Denver, who scored a wire-to-wire victory, also understood why the gallery was rallying behind Schefler. He even heaped praise on the well-loved golfer.

“I get it. They root for Scottie. Grand Slams only happen a few times. He’s going to get it. He’s the best player in the world,” said Clark. “But today is my day.”

Scheffler finished tied in fourth place with Keith Mitchell and JT Poston.

He came close to winning the US Open in 2022, ending up tied in second place with Will Zalatoris. They lost to Matt Fitzpatrick.

As for Clark, it felt like 2023 again, when he won the crown despite being the underdog.

“Anytime someone said something negative to me, I replaced it with something positive. You know, some of it’s self-deserved. I kind of brought it on myself, but I also get it too. Scottie was going for the career Grand Slam, and it hasn’t happened very often,” added Clark.

Clark has now won twice in six starts in the US Open, trailing only John McDermott, Walter Hagen, and Ernie Els for the fastest to get two titles, according to ESPN’s Mark Schlabach.
