The New York Mets’ season from hell continues. On Sunday night, the Mets lost once more, ending their three-game set against the Philadelphia Phillies on a low note in a 6-2 defeat. The Phillies wasted no time making their mark on the game, as they went ahead by five runs after just two innings — putting the Mets on the backfoot, from which they could not recover.
This latest defeat puts the Mets at 34-43 on the season, and they are approaching the halfway mark of the season as one of the worst teams in the National League. This is nowhere close to where New York envisioned they would be prior to the start of the 2026 campaign.
The good news is that there is a long way to go in the season still, leaving plenty of time for the Mets to redeem themselves. But they have to play with so much urgency, with star outfielder Juan Soto imploring his team to lock in.
“It’s tough. It’s really tough to give up the lead right away, but it’s part of the game. We just got to be better. We got to play better baseball and go out there and execute,” Soto told reporters, via SNY on X (formerly Twitter).

It puts so much pressure on the offense whenever the Mets fall behind early in games. Suffice to say, offense is not New York’s strong suit this season, especially with Francisco Lindor and Luis Robert on the injured list.
The Mets offense ranks a pitiful 26th in runs scored thus far this season, and their team OPS is the second-worst in MLB. This team is not in the position to be hemorrhaging runs early in the game, so it is up to the pitching staff to hold its own as the offense tries to sort itself out.
