Reporter mentions 6 starters Braves should pursue in addition to Tarik Skubal

The Atlanta Braves have been rolling right along of late, currently sitting with the best record in the MLB at 45-21 after a sweep over the Pittsburgh Pirates over the weekend. The Braves’ pitching staff has more than held down the fort so far this season despite a slew of injuries, with some key players still yet to make their pitching debut.

In the postseason, pitching will be at a premium, and many have encouraged Atlanta to throw their hat into the Tarik Skubal sweepstakes with the Detroit Tigers. However, recently, MLB insider Mark Bowman of MLB.com broke down some potentially more realistic candidates for the Braves to go after.

“…the Braves should continue to monitor Skubal’s market, while also pursuing Michael Wacha (Royals), Reid Detmers (Angels), Kevin Gausman (if the Blue Jays sell) or Logan Webb (won’t be available, just dreaming here). They should also pursue intra-division deals for Freddy Peralta (Mets) or Sandy Alcantara (Marlins). Quite honestly, I’m not as high on Alcantara as many of these other pitchers,” opined Bowman.

Many of these pitchers, particularly Gausman and Peralta, have been hot names on the pitching trade market throughout this season, and the Mets’ disastrous campaign in 2026 so far could make them sellers at the deadline, which would make them much more willing to take a deal for Peralta.

Meanwhile, in regards to Skubal, Bowman noted that he “…wouldn’t want to pay the prospect price necessary to get what would likely end up being a rental,” in other words, predicting that Skubal would leave in free agency shortly thereafter.

In any case, the Braves still have just under two months to make any potential moves before the trade deadline occurs in early August.
