Although the Chicago Cubs are thick in the mix of the NL Central with a 34-32 record, it’s been a bit of a struggle for Alex Bregman. While he’s had slow starts to a season before, the 2026 campaign has been a bit of a mess for the club’s newly acquired third baseman. On Monday, Bregman opened up about his struggles at the plate, and it might not sit well with the fanbase.
Bregman, who is 32 years old, was open and honest about his season so far. He admitted to playing poorly and said he must improve going forward, according to Jesse Rogers of ESPN. Alex Bregman ended his statement by claiming that if he had been playing to his standards all year, Chicago could have a much better record than right now.
“I’ve been terrible,” said Bregman. “I need to play better. Offensively, it’s been awful. I’ve failed many times in this game. I’ve struggled. I’ve started slow before, I’ve started fast before. When you’re struggling, there is only one way forward, and that’s straight, head-on through it.
“It comes down to executing in the game. I haven’t executed all year,” continued Bregman. “Runners in scoring position, I’ve been god-awful. I need to be better. If I’m better over the last how many games, we probably win the majority of them.”
Actions speak louder than words, and that’s pretty much what needs to happen moving forward for the 11-year veteran. His performances have done more harm than good, and considering the Cubs are still within reach of the NL Central race, turning things around now could be massive for Chicago.
But for that to happen, Alex Bregman just has to be better, as he stated. If not, then fans are likely going to remain a bit upset with the three-time All-Star. Through an NL-high 263 at-bats, Bregman has recorded just 64 hits, five home runs, and 19 RBIs, giving him a .243 batting average and .327 OBP. Additionally, his .669 OPS is the lowest it’s ever been in his career.
While it’s good that Bregman is acknowledging the issues, he’s still been batting in the middle of the lineup. That decision from manager Craig Counsell may have stunted the Cubs’ offense so far this season. Changing up the order of the lineup could help, but at the end of the day, Bregman just has to perform better when he’s at the plate.
The Cubs have Monday off, which could be a perfect moment for Bregman to hit the reset button. Chicago will be right back to it on Tuesday, as the team takes on the Colorado Rockies for the first matchup of a three-game series in Colorado.
