Wyndham Clark is now a two-time major champion after taking a one-stroke victory, winning the US Open at Shinnecock. Clark was not the fan favorite at the US Open, but he did have some friends in the crowd.
After the victory, a hot mic caught Clark’s plan for after the event, according to Christopher Powers of Golf Digest.
“Let’s GO! We’re drinkin’ tonight,” Clark told a friend after winning.
While fans were not thrilled with Clark winning, the friends seemed genuinely excited about the victory. His father also knew he was Clark was having the fight the crowd, according to Brody Miller of The Athletic.
“He was fighting everything,” his father Randall said. “He was fighting everyone. He’s all alone out there.”
Clarl had a meldown at Oakmont Country Club a year ago, causing the destricton of a 121-year old lock. It is was an event that went viral and caused a negative perception of the golfer. Still, thosw who know him best know thats not him, such as his girlfriend Emily Tanner.
“I mean, he’s a really gushy guy,” Tanner said. “Like he’s just a big teddy bear and he just loves everyone and everything. I mean, there’s not one person in his life that I’ve met that hasn’t said amazing things about him since he was a little boy.”
His caddies is also backing him up.
“I’ve known him for six or seven years as a friend and caddy on tour for someone else, and he’s always been a great friend,” his caddie, David Pelekoudas, said. “He’s always generous. He always asks you how you’re doing. He talks to you on your off weeks when you’re not all out together, and I just think he really does care about other people and he takes care of everyone around him.”
Now, Clark gets to celebrate with those who are rooting for him and have a drink with them whie enjoying the victory.
