Michigan players’ transfer portal options after Dusty May bolts for Mavericks

Michigan won the national championship in 2026 under Dusty May. Now, Michigan will have a new head coach, as Dusty May is going to be the head coach for the Dallas Mavericks.

Michigan is bringing back a lethal roster. Elliot Cadeau, Trey McKenney, Oscar Goodman, and Ricky Liburd will all be back for the Wolverines. Meanwhile, Michigan has a six-man class of 2027 group coming in. Now, they will need to understand their options with May leaving, according to Pete Thamel of ESPN.

“May’s departure means that Michigan’s players can explore their future options, as under NCAA rules a 15-day transfer window will open five days after a new head coach is hired or publicly announced,” ESPN noted.

Players will have to wait until a replacement for May is announced, plus another five days. Michigan does have Mike Boynton on the bench currently. He joined the Michigan coaching staff when Dusty May was hired by the Wolverines, heading into the 2024-25 season. He was previously the head coach for Oklahoma State for seven seasons and has familiarity with the current players on the Michigan roster.

Considering how late in the cycle this is happening, multiple players will draw interest from programs potentially offering a high-value NIL deal to woo them away from the Wolverines. Still, players may be frustrated as they expected May to be around.

“During Michigan’s championship parade in April, athletic director Warde Manuel announced May had agreed to a new deal that would keep him at Michigan for ‘many years to come.’ That deal wasn’t signed at the time of Manuel’s proclamation, and no deal announcement emerged in the subsequent months,” ESPN noted.

As for now, May will be looking towards the NBA Draft and could snag former Michigan player Yazel Lendeborg.
