The Edmonton Oilers have made a second move this offseason to take care of their own players. The Oilers just recently locked up Jason Dickinson to a five-year contract.
Now, the Oilers have re-signed Connor Murphy to a new deal, according to Ryan Rushing of TSN.
“Sounds like Connor Murphy is extending with the Oilers. 5 years at 4.1m per season,” Rushing posted on X, formerly Twitter.
Murphy is coming off a four-year deal he signed with the Chicago Blackhawks and took effect for the 2022-23 season. He was being paid an AAV of $4.4 million per year, and will be taking a small pay cut to stay with the Oilers.
Murphy was originally drafted by the Phoenix Coyotes with the 20th overall selection of the 2011 NHL Draft, and would spend four seasons with the franchise before being traded to the Chicago Blackhawks. Murphy became a mainstay with the Hawks and would play with them into this past season. He was traded in March to the Oilers in exchange for a draft pick.
Murphy would play in 20 games with the Oilers, lighting the lamp once and adding three assists. He also played in all six games of the playoffs for the Oilers, finding the back of the net twice and adding a helper.
With the deal, the Oilers will be down to under $10 million in cap space this upcoming season. They still have Colton Dach and Spencer Stastney as restricted free agents looking for new deals. They also have Jack Roslovic, Kasperia Kapanen, Adam Henrique, and Curtis Lazar as unrestricted free agents this offseason.
