Orioles’ Jackson Holliday gets 100% real on his injury concern

Baseball is such a momentum-based sport, and Jackson Holliday just hasn’t been able to gain any momentum this year. The Baltimore Orioles star was once the top prospect in all of baseball, but his MLB career has been underwhelming up to this point. The middle infielder broke his hamate bone just a few live at-bats into spring training workouts. Surgery on the hand injury was expected to keep him out a few weeks, but recovery turned into a multi-month process that delayed the former first overall pick’s debut until May.

Through 29 games since his return, the second baseman is batting just .200, and he suffered yet another setback when he left in the eighth inning of the June 20 game against the Los Angeles Dodgers because of groin tightness. This newfound injury prevented Holliday from being in Baltimore’s lineup on June 21 and only adds further concern regarding Holliday’s third season.

The good news is that the injury isn’t believed to be serious, and Holliday could be back in the lineup sooner rather than later. In fact, Holliday believes he could have been used off the bench in the Orioles last game if he was needed, according to Jacob Calvin Meyer.

The Orioles long had the best farm system in baseball, but many of their high-potential youngsters haven’t proven themselves at the major league level yet, which has led to Baltimore continuously coming up short of expectations. It is fair to say that all of Holliday, Adley Rutschman, Gunnar Henderson, Coby Mayo, Samuel Basallo, and Colton Cowser haven’t performed as impressively as the team would have hoped this season, and Jordan Westburg is out for the season.

Injuries have ravaged the team in recent years. Hopefully, Holliday will return to action soon and prove that he can still become the star he is supposed to become.
