Darryn Peterson meets with Jazz, but there’s a catch

The Utah Jazz are just over 24 hours away from the 2026 NBA Draft, where they will have the number two overall pick. Many anticipate that the Jazz will select former Kansas point guard Darryn Peterson at the slot, with the Washington Wizards expected to select AJ Dybantsa out of BYU at number one.

There have been some murmurs about a potential lack of enthusiasm from Peterson about joining the Jazz, but recently, NBA insider Jake Fischer reported on a positive development on that front, albeit with a caveat.

“Darryn Peterson just told me here at NBA Draft media day that he did meet with the Utah Jazz over this weekend. Peterson declined to say whether that was in-person, but said it was more of a Combine-like interview than an on-court workout,” reported Fischer on X, formerly Twitter.

Peterson enjoyed an excellent season with the Jayhawks last year when he was on the court, but there were some concerns about health, durability, and how much he cared about the game during his time there, all of which threatened to drop his draft stock. However, Peterson saved face with his performance and interviews at the NBA Draft Combine, and now, it appears the Jazz are the frontrunners to select him at number two and give Keyonte George an intriguing running mate in the backcourt.

Last year, the Jazz encountered a similar issue, with some wondering if Ace Bailey would show up in Utah after the team drafted him, but it ended up not amounting to anything, and Bailey put together a solid rookie season with the team.

In any case, the NBA Draft is slated to get underway on Tuesday evening from Brooklyn.
