The St. Louis Cardinals are a surprise contender, but they need pitching. The Arizona Diamondbacks are hovering around .500 and may be open to selling ahead of the MLB trade deadline. Former All-Star pitcher Zac Gallen has endured a miserable season, but he still could catch the Cardinals’ attention before the trade deadline. Jim Bowden of The Athletic recently wrote an article where under-the-radar trade targets were mentioned, and Gallen was among the players listed in the story.
So, why should the Cardinals pursue a pitcher who currently has a 6.10 ERA?
Gallen has struggled this year. There is no question about it. The Diamondbacks hurler has turned in a 6.10 ERA across 16 starts. The 2023 All-Star has been unable to pitch up to his expectations, but he still could make sense for the Cardinals.
While Michael McGreevy and Andre Pallante have performed well, many other starters in the rotation have ERAs above 4.00. The Cardinals are not in a position to trade for the best available starter, as they have been rebuilding and will not want to surrender their best prospects. So instead of trading for a star like Tarik Skubal, buying low on Gallen may intrigue the team.
Gallen’s track record suggests he can perform at a much more consistent level than he is right now. Perhaps all he needs is a fresh start to get back on track. At the very least, he will give the Cardinals’ a veteran presence in the starting rotation.
The Cardinals should consider reaching out to the Diamondbacks about a potential Zac Gallen trade.
