The New York Yankees are in first place in the AL East, as the club seeks its second World Series appearance in three years. While the top-hitting team in MLB has a solid chance at making a deep run in the playoffs once again, the club faces some strong competition in the conference.
As of Monday, June 22, only five teams in the American League, including the Yankees, have winning records. However, nobody is running away with it in their respective divisions. Despite that, Novig gives New York a 29.1% chance to represent the AL in the World Series this year. That’s good enough to make the franchise the clear favorite according to Novig’s prediction.

New York is well ahead in Novig’s prediction, as it appears Novig believes the Yankees will compete for a title in 2026. However, the club is not guaranteed to reach the World Series.
Three teams stand out amongst the crowd as true challengers to the Yankees. Each of them brings something unique to the table to make a push for a championship in their own right. With that said, here are the three teams that threaten the Yankees’ second World Series appearance in three years.
Seattle Mariners
As previously mentioned, Seattle is second on Novig’s prediction with an 18.3% chance to represent the AL in the World Series. The Mariners’ biggest strength is the pitching group. It is arguably the best in the league, as the starting rotation consists of Logan Gilbert, Bryan Woo, George Kirby, Emerson Hancock, and Bryce Miller. Meanwhile, Luis Castillo has shifted to a “piggyback” role in the rotation.
The Mariners have the second-best team ERA (3.62) in the AL, while also being tied first in WHIP (1.18), and ranked No. 2 in strikeouts (692). Additionally, Seattle has the 10th most saves in the conference right now with 19. Pitching is what is keeping the club competitive at the head of the AL West.
Although the offense has been lackluster to begin the 2026 season, the Mariners’ lineup has plenty of firepower and has the potential to become one of the best-hitting teams in MLB if the offense can get rolling. Cal Raleigh is back healthy, Julio Rodriguez has been hot of late, and the infield is led by two exciting prospects in Cole Young and Colt Emerson. The Yankees need to keep an eye on Seattle in the second half of the season.
Tampa Bay Rays
The Tampa Bay Rays own the second-best record in the American League, and would be in first place in any other division that wasn’t the AL East. What Tampa lacks in power, the team makes up for in speed, as manager Kevin Cash has his guys playing small ball to get the job done. The Rays have the third most steals in the AL (69), as the offense focuses on getting guys on base and into scoring position.
Thanks to consistent contact hitting, the offense leads the conference in batting average (.256) and OBP (.334). Impressively enough, the Rays are scoring runs without hitting many balls over the fence, as the offense ranks 10th in RBIs (312) while hitting the fewest home runs in the AL (62).
But the backbone of success leans on the pitching. The Rays own the sixth-best ERA in the AL (3.91) while having the second-best WHIP (1.23). Similar to the offense doing things differently by using speed over power, Tampa has the fewest strikeouts in the conference with 587, as the club utilizes one of the strongest defenses in baseball to support the pitching group.
Chicago White Sox
Okay, this might be the most “hear me out” pick you’ll come across, but there is reason to believe the Chicago White Sox can pull off the impossible and beat out the Yankees to reach the World Series this year. First and foremost, the White Sox are relying on power to earn wins this season. The club has the second-most home runs in 2026 with 106, while owning a .410 slugging percentage (fifth-best in the AL).
Munetaka Murakami has been a pleasant surprise. Although he is working his way back from a lower-body injury, the Japanese native was once tied for the most home runs in MLB before suffering the strain in his right hamstring. But the White Sox are stacked with exciting prospects who all seem to be getting on the same page all at once, helping generate the seventh-most runs in the conference with 353.
Additionally, the pitching has been surprisingly good. The club is ninth in the AL in both ERA (4.41) and WHIP (1.34), and, similar to the Rays, the White Sox are relying on strong defense behind the pitching group to earn wins. Getting Murakami back healthy is key for Chicago’s chances, but if this team gets hot in the second half of the season, they can certainly be a tough squad to go against in the playoffs.
