How Trae Young made history as a bag getter with new Wizards contract

Recently, Washington Wizards guard Trae Young re-signed with the team on a new four-year contract extension worth $212 million, as reported by NBA insider Shams Charania of ESPN. The deal keeps Young with Washington over the long term after he recently opted out of his player option for next season.

Now, more has been revealed about just how well Young is doing financially when compared to NBA players historically.

“With his new contract, Trae Young is now Top 20 all-time in guaranteed NBA earnings,” reported HoopsHype on X, formerly Twitter.

Young has signed multiple big contracts in his career, including a five-year extension with the Atlanta Hawks back in 2021. While some of this feat can be attributed to the dramatic rise in NBA salaries over the years, it’s still an impressive accomplishment that a small guard was able to achieve this in the modern NBA.

Young joined the Wizards when the Hawks traded him there back in January amid an injury. In fact, Young only played in five games for Washington this season, sitting back and watching as the team also traded for Anthony Davis this past year. After that, Washington was awarded the number one pick in the upcoming 2026 NBA Draft, which is slated to take place on Tuesday, giving the Wizards some considerable building blocks for the future.

It remains to be seen whether Young will be able to recapture the 2021 version of himself that led the Hawks to the Eastern Conference Finals. While he is still a strong point guard, he hasn’t been able to reach those heights in the five years since, but perhaps a change of scenery will do the trick.

The Wizards certainly hope so after committing a significant chunk of the salary cap to him.
