Why Giannis Antetokounmpo trade to Heat can’t be finalized until July 6

After months of speculation, dilly-dallying, and uncertainty, Giannis Antetokounmpo has finally been traded after the Milwaukee Bucks and the Miami Heat agreed on a blockbuster deal on Monday.

The Heat will receive Antetokounmpo and Bobby Portis, while the Bucks will get Tyler Herro, Kel’el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kasparas Jakucionis, three first-round picks, a second-round pick, and a pick swap, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania.

The Heat beat out the Boston Celtics and the Minnesota Timberwolves, as the tug of war for the two-time MVP had reportedly boiled down to three teams.

ESPN’s Bobby Marks, however, noted that the Heat and the Bucks will have to wait for a few more days before the multi-player trade can be finalized.

“Because of the current first apron restrictions, the Giannis trade to Miami cannot be finalized until July 6,” wrote Marks on X.

“The Bobby Portis $14.5 million salary goes into the $16.8 million Duncan Robinson trade exception.”

Miami shipped Robinson to the Detroit Pistons last year in a sign-and-trade deal in exchange for Simone Fontecchio.

The 31-year-old Antetokounmpo will get his much-desired reset with the Heat following a turbulent campaign with the Bucks, which was marred by rumors of internal strife, lack of transparency, and a toxic environment.

While the 10-time All-Star stressed that Milwaukee will always be home to him and his family, he was ready to move forward with his career as he continues his quest to win a second title.

Antetokounmpo played a career-low 36 games this season, averaging 27.6 points, 9.8 rebounds, and 5.4 assists. The Bucks missed the playoffs for the first time in 10 years.
