It finally happened. The Giannis Antetokounmpo Era of the Milwaukee Bucks has ended after the team parted ways with the two-time NBA Most Valuable Player, trading him to the Miami Heat in a deal that stunned the basketball world on Monday night.
Together with Antetokounmpo to the Heat is Bobby Portis, while Miami sends Tyler Herro, Kel’el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kasparas Jakucionis and three first-round picks.
Antetokounmpo’s impact on the Bucks is undeniable, but he will be starting a new chapter with a different team.
Before he could play his first game with the Heat, the 10-time All-Star had already made history, as he became the latest in a small group of former NBA MVPs to have been traded.
He is the sixth overall in that department, joining Steve Nash, LeBron James, Moses Malone, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Wilt Chamberlain. Save for James, all those names are now in the Basketball Hall of Fame, though the Los Angeles Lakers superstar’s spot in Springfield has long been reserved, while Antetokounmpo is also on his way there.
Antetokounmpo has a year left on his current contract before a player option for the 2027-28 season, and he can use that as leverage to put himself in a much better position to decide his own path down the road.
For now, a lot will have to be talked about this dramatic transfer of a Bucks franchise cornerstone to an Eastern Conference rival.
In 13 seasons with the Bucks, Giannis Antetokounmpo saw action in 895 games and averaged 24.1, 9.9 rebounds, and 5.0 assists, while shooting 55.4 percent from the field.
