Lionel Messi is on a generational run over the last few years. While most football players’ careers taper off towards the end of their prime, the Argentinian legend just continues to add on to his legacy. His latest achievement puts him on top of the football world, claiming the record for most goals in World Cup history after scoring two against Austria in the group stages.
One of his fellow Argentinians watched the record-setting game live. San Antonio Spurs legend and Argentinian hero Manu Ginobili watched his country’s game against Austria, which was held in the US. Ginobili reacted to Messi’s record-setting performance.
Hoy con la flia nos dimos el enorme gusto de ver un partido de ARG en un mundial x primera vez y encima, ver al 10 transformarse en el máximo goleador histórico en mundiales!! Qué privilegio!!

Messi, who led the Argentina national team to their first World Cup in 2022, has been playing incredibly well in this year’s iteration of the tournament. Through two games, Messi has been responsible for all five of Argentina’s goals. He scored three in their tournament opener against Algeria, and added two against Austria to secure the record, overtaking France’s Kylian Mbappe and Germany’s Miroslav Klose.
As for Ginobili, the Spurs legend is up there with Lionel Messi as one of the greatest Argentinian athletes of all-time. Aside from his stellar resume in the NBA (four championships and arguably the greatest sixth man of all-time), Ginobili has brought international glory to his country. He was the leader of the Argentinian basketball team that upset Team USA in 2004 en route to their only gold in Olympic basketball history. Both Ginobili and Messi are immortalized in their country’s histoy.
Argentina will continue their World Cup run in a few days when they take on Jordan. They have already secured their spot in the Round of 32, but they are still playing for seeding and potentially getting a more favorable matchup.
