If you told Jose Alvarado at the start of the season that he would win a championship with his childhood team, he probably would not have believed it. But that was exactly the magic of the New York Knicks’ run to the title. Eventually, they made everybody believe.
Alvarado was traded to the Knicks by the New Orleans Pelicans in February in exchange for Dalen Terry and two second-round picks. It was a homecoming for the spunky guard, who was born and raised in Brooklyn. Since then, it has been like a fairy tale for Alvarado, who quickly endeared himself to fans.
He made his first start at Madison Square Garden in March. A few months later, he was holding the Larry O’Brien Trophy after helping the Knicks win the NBA Finals against the San Antonio Spurs.
On Monday, the 28-year-old Alvarado announced his return—on X.
“I’m back on this,” said Alvarado, who had not posted in almost a year.
He was probably still on a high after their week-long merriment.
“One of the best eight days of my life,” added Alvarado.
He agreed to push back the deadline for his $4.5 million player option from June 22 to June 26 to give more wiggle room for the Knicks in free agency and the NBA Draft.
It is hard not to root for the pint-sized playmaker. He was undrafted in 2021 out of Georgia Tech and toiled in the G League before earning a spot on the Pelicans. He carved out a role for himself with his energy, doggedness, and quickness.
Those same attributes made him a key cog of the Knicks. He had his moments against the Spurs, most notably in the fourth quarter of Game 4, wherein he made critical buckets in their historic 29-point comeback.
His sudden comeback on X is right up there.
