Cubs roster expected to receive crucial boost after difficult Giants series

The Chicago Cubs are reportedly planning to activate infielder/outfielder Matt Shaw from the injured list ahead of the team’s upcoming series against the Colorado Rockies on Tuesday, according to Jesse Rogers of ESPN. Shaw’s return is set to come following the Cubs’ 2-1 series loss to the San Francisco Giants over the weekend.

“Cubs roster news: The team is activating INF/OF Matt Shaw (back) from the IL tomorrow after he spent a few days on a rehab assignment in the minors, sources tell ESPN. Not a surprise considering the Major League team’s offensive and baserunning woes lately,” Rogers reported.

Shaw has been dealing with a back injury concern. His return will not make or break Chicago’s postseason chances, but it will give the roster a crucial boost.

Shaw, 24, offers defensive versatility and hitting potential. He can play third base, second base or outfield. Through 42 games played in 2026, Shaw has hit .242/.291/.400 to go along with three home runs, six doubles and three stolen bases. Shaw finished ninth in National League Rookie of the Year voting in 2025 after recording 13 home runs, 21 doubles and 17 stolen bases.

The Cubs need all of the help they can get at the moment. Shaw’s return will give the ball club important roster depth.

Chicago is currently 34-32 overall. The team is tied for third place in the National League Central standings, where they are 7.5 games behind the first place Milwaukee Brewers.

The Cubs’ upcoming three-game series against the Rockies in Colorado is scheduled to begin on Tuesday night at 8:40 PM EST.
