After seeing his name pop up in trade rumors for years, Tyler Herro is finally on his way out of the Miami Heat organization. Herro was one of four players the Milwaukee Bucks acquired in the blockbuster Giannis Antetokounmpo trade, and it looks as though the 26-year-old guard is ecstatic over the opportunity for a fresh start with a new team.
As per Chris Haynes of NBA on Prime, Herro is “thrilled about a fresh start”, especially with the Bucks, as he “always envisioned returning home at some point during his NBA career”. Herro grew up in the city of Milwaukee and played high school basketball in Whitnall High School, located in Milwaukee County at Greenfield.
The catch, of course, is that there are no guarantees that Herro sticks around long enough to play for his hometown Bucks. He is in the final year of his contract (making around $33 or so million), which makes him a reasonable trade candidate, particularly for a contending team that needs the scoring punch he can provide.
With Antetokounmpo gone, the Bucks are expected to take a step back, and considering Herro’s current contract situation, his best utility to a rebuilding/retooling Milwaukee team may be as a trade asset.
In particular, the Detroit Pistons have popped up as a potential trade destination for Herro should the Bucks decide to not keep the former All-Star guard. This previous postseason showed that Cade Cunningham is in dire need of someone who can share the ballhandling and shot-creating workload with him, and Herro certainly fits the bill.
The Bucks are going to be in asset accumulation mode, so it is going to be due diligence for them to put out feelers on what they could get for Herro.
Nevertheless, it’s not the worst idea to at least keep Herro to start the 2026-27 season as they will have the opportunity to trade him prior to the deadline
