On Monday, LSU landed a commitment from Opelousas Northwest standout Markez Davis, a three-star defensive back in the 2027 class who selected the Tigers over Houston, Texas Tech, West Virginia, and several other Power Four programs.
The 6-foot-3, 178-180-pound Louisiana native became LSU’s seventh commitment in the 2027 recruiting cycle and the program’s third pledge in less than 24 hours. Davis joined five-star defensive end K.J. Green and three-star running back Brennen Lacey, both of whom committed during the previous day as Lane Kiffin and the Tigers continued to build momentum in June.
Davis announced his decision following an official visit to Baton Rouge. LSU emerged as the favorite after extending an offer in May and hosting him on campus during the weekend of May 29. His recruitment accelerated significantly over the last month, with offers arriving from programs including Alabama, Houston, Mississippi State, West Virginia, and others after a productive 2025 junior season.
The Tigers recruited Davis primarily as a cornerback. Defensive backs coach Corey Raymond played a central role in the recruitment, identifying Davis as his “hidden gem” and viewing him as a “must-have” in Louisiana. Davis is expected to play in the secondary when he arrives on campus, and the opportunity to develop under Raymond was a major factor in his decision.
Davis is the No. 966 overall prospect in the 2027 class, the No. 96 cornerback nationally, and the No. 27 player in Louisiana, according to the Rivals Industry Ranking. 247Sports lists him as the No. 28 cornerback in the country and the No. 15 overall prospect in Louisiana. He is also regarded as a Top-30 athlete nationally in the 2027 cycle.
Following Davis’ pledge, LSU’s 2027 class climbed from No. 52 to No. 45 in the 247Sports Composite rankings. Rivals ranks the Tigers’ class No. 24 nationally.
LSU’s 2027 group is currently led by five-star tight end Ahmad Hudson, Green, and highly regarded quarterback Payton Houston, who is ranked as the nation’s No. 8 quarterback by Rivals. With Davis becoming the first cornerback in the class, the Tigers plugged a glaring hole in the secondary while keeping one of Louisiana’s fastest-rising prospects in-state.
