The Miami Heat acquired their target in the offseason after getting Giannis Antetokounmpo in a massive trade with the Milwaukee Bucks on Monday.
As expected, the Heat gave up Tyler Herro, Kel’el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kasparas Jakucionis, the No. 13 pick in this week’s NBA Draft, and future assets. The price tag was steep, but Miami was all in on Antetokounmpo.
Now that they have the two-time MVP, the Heat could set their sights on another generational superstar—although it won’t be easy, to say the least—according to a report from the Miami Herald’s Barry Jackson.
“The Heat could try to lure impending free agent LeBron James with its full midlevel exception, but a James return is considered a long shot,” wrote Jackson.
There have been rumors that James could take his talents again to South Beach. He loved his time with the Heat, although it did not end ideally. With the Los Angeles Lakers centering its vision on Luka Doncic, James might want a new challenge. Teaming up with Antetokounmpo in Miami could be enticing.
Plus, familiarity won’t be a problem, obviously, as James had played for coach Erik Spoelstra. The financial issue, however, could be the biggest hurdle.
The four-time MVP left Miami, which he led to two titles, in 2014 to return to the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Aside from the four-time MVP, Jackson said the Heat could also go after Nikola Vucevic, Tobias Harris, Khris Middleton, Kelly Oubre Jr., Tim Hardaway Jr., and Anfernee Simons, among others.
Chad Johnson stated that Heat president Pat Riley has “one more thing up his sleeve.” Could he be referring to James? Whatever it is, it has been proven over the years that it is not wise to bet against Riley.
