In the wake of the blockbuster Giannis Antetokounmpo trade to the Miami Heat, Emmanuel Acho believes Pat Riley has moved his team one step closer to a championship.
After years of rumors and reports about a potential trade involving Antetokounmpo, the Heat finally executed a deal to acquire the two-time MVP and former Finals MVP, as well as Bobby Portis, in exchange for three first-round draft picks, a pick swap, a second-rounder, Tyler Herro, Kel’el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., and Kasparas Jakucionis.
Although there are questions about the Heat’s ceiling, considering their and Antetokounmpo’s regular-season and postseason struggles recently, Acho was adamant that Miami became more of a contender because of the trade.
“The Heat are closer to a championship today than they were yesterday, and, realistically speaking, that’s what the hell matters,” Acho said on the ‘Speakeasy’ podcast. “Because Giannis Antetokounmpo led a team to a finals with Khris Middleton as his second-best player, with [Brook] Lopez, with [Jae] Crowder, I believe, with [Pat] Connaughton, with Jrue Holiday — he led a team with those individuals to an NBA Finals. So with all due respect to how you feel about the trade, the Miami Heat are closer to a championship today with Giannis Antetokounmpo and with Bam Adebayo, of which they will likely move, potentially. They’re closer today than they were yesterday.
“They’ve been a Play-In team for the last five years. Five years consecutively, they’ve been a Play-In team. So at minimum, yes, there are questions in regards to the backcourt. Nobody can dispute that. Would I have preferred to keep and retain Tyler Hero? Absolutely. But they’re closer to a championship today, and that is all that matters.”

The trade not only gives the Heat some much-needed hope, but it also signals that the Bucks are also committing to a different direction after a successful 12-year run with Antetokounmpo, who had spent the entirety of his NBA career in Milwaukee.
Selected 15th overall in the 2013 draft, Antetokounmpo became a surprise superstar for the Bucks, with whom he won two NBA MVPs and, most importantly, an NBA championship in 2021.
